One Apprenticeship, Endless Opportunities: Lucy’s Freight Forwarding Journey
One of our International Freight Forwarding learners, Lucy, is building her career in the logistics industry – and we just had to share her story.
Through the Level 3 International Freight Forwarding Specialist apprenticeship, Lucy has gained valuable industry knowledge, developed her IT skills, and grown in confidence throughout her apprenticeship at Cardinal Global Logistics. With the support of her tutor, Kerrie, she has expanded her understanding of the industry, gained experience across different departments and developed the practical skills needed to build a career in international freight forwarding.

Lucy’s tutor, Kerrie, played a pivotal role throughout her apprenticeship and shared this about her progress:

What are you goals for the remainder of your apprenticeship and beyond?
“My goals for the remainder of my apprenticeship and beyond vary. Firstly, I am aiming to complete my Level 3 qualification as an International Freight Forwarder. As I move towards the final stages of the qualification, I’m excited to see all the knowledge I have learnt from the past year come together to showcase my skills.
Additionally, I am working hard to source more in-person BIFA YFN events such as port tours and behind the scenes operations. Over the past year, I have attended many virtual and some in-person events which have not only boosted my confidence but provided me with some unique industry knowledge such as fashion logistics. Therefore, a big goal for me is to continue attending these events to broaden my knowledge while I still have the opportunity.
My final goal is to continue to embrace all the unique opportunities that are presented to me through my rotation with Cardinal Global Logistics. Whether this be the remainder of the departments that I have yet to explore such as marketing or settling into a permanent role within the business. This is definitely something I am excited for post-rotation and look forward to having my own clients and shipments to be responsible for. “
If you could go back to the start of your apprenticeship, what advice would you give yourself?
“If I could go back to the start, I would definitely tell myself that I’ve got this! No one is scary or judging you, and everyone genuinely wants you to succeed, whether that’s the team at Seetec or Cardinal Global Logistics.
In just under a year, I’ve been given so many opportunities, and I’d make sure to let past me know to embrace them all and step outside my comfort zone. I’ve 100% achieved this by attending customs courses and networking events, which have encouraged me to get myself out there and find even more opportunities for myself.
Finally, one of the biggest pieces of advice that I would give myself would be not to be afraid to ask questions. And ask lots of them. No question is too silly or unimportant, and I’ve found it’s the best way to actively engage in what I’m learning, the tasks I’m completing, and expanding my knowledge overall. If you’re someone at the start of your apprenticeship journey, soak it in – it goes faster than you think. “
