After qualifying as a student nurse, Rebecca was ready to begin her career in nursing. However, securing her first role proved more challenging than expected.
Referred to the Restart Scheme by Totnes Jobcentre Plus, Rebecca was navigating a competitive job market alongside a new registrant hiring embargo, making it difficult to find the right opportunity despite her qualifications.
With support from her Employment Adviser, Amber, and the wider Seetec team, Rebecca received tailored support to help her move closer to her goal of working in nursing.
Building confidence for interviews
One of the key areas of support was interview preparation. With experienced members of the Seetec team helping her prepare for NHS-style panel interviews, Rebecca was able to build her confidence and develop techniques to showcase her skills and experience.
Seetec also provided financial support towards the cost of Rebecca’s Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) pin. Having recently completed university, this helped ease some of the financial pressure she was facing while looking for work.
Throughout her time on the Restart Scheme, Amber also liaised with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to ensure Rebecca had access to appropriate benefits information and support.
Staying determined through setbacks
Rebecca attended several interviews during her journey, but not every opportunity resulted in a job offer. Despite these setbacks, she remained determined to achieve her goal of starting her nursing career.
With continued encouragement from Amber and the Seetec team, Rebecca developed her confidence and resilience, using each experience to prepare for the next opportunity.
Her perseverance ultimately paid off, and Rebecca has now successfully secured a role in nursing.
She credits the support and encouragement she received from Amber and the Seetec team with helping her stay motivated and move forward during what was a particularly challenging period.
Reflecting on her experience, Rebecca said she was treated with respect, dignity and kindness throughout her time on the Restart Scheme. For her, the combination of practical support, guidance and encouragement made a real difference in helping her achieve her goal.
Rebecca’s journey is a great example of how determination, combined with the right support, can help people overcome barriers and take the next step towards sustainable employment.
