Preparing for your new job

Whether it’s your first day starting a new job or you’re preparing to jump back into work, we’re here to guide you through those early steps with tips, support, and resources to help you feel confident and ready.

Supporting you on your employment journey

Huge congratulations on starting your new job! We hope you feel incredibly proud.

It’s also likely you’re feeling excited and a little nervous, particularly if you’ve been out of work for a while. We’re still very much here to support you on your journey.

Here are a few things to remember to help you on your way…

We may be able to support you financially with things like travel, childcare or clothes to help you through your first week or two.

Here are a few things to help you get ready for starting your new job:

  • Ask your employer – make sure you know your start date, hours and pay. Also, let them know your pay details and next of kin.
  • Plan your journey to work in advance – do you need a bus ticket or money for petrol? If so, we can help!
  • Do you need smart clothes or protective equipment (hard hat, steel toe caps and hi-vis)? – we can help with this too.
  • Don’t forget to let your Jobcentre Plus Work Coach know about your new job – they can tell you about your benefits entitlement once you’re working.
  • Funding support – if you have a disability or health condition, we can support you to apply for funding towards any equipment or support you might need.

It’s a good idea to get everything ready the day before. Think about clothes, food and drink options.

  • Food options – do you need to take a packed lunch or is there food to buy there?
  • Save your Seetec adviser’s number in your phone – any worries, give us a call…
  • Check the weather forecast – it’s an idea to check the weather to see if it will affect your journey.
  • Plan ahead – make sure you know where to go and who to ask for when you arrive.

During your first few weeks, you will be referred to our In-work support team who will stay in regular contact with you*.

You will also be able to contact us if you need help or simply want to chat things through:

  • Keep us updated on how things are going – do you have any worries? Or perhaps you would like to increase your hours or understand your wage slip.
  • We also have mental health and wellbeing support – we can also signpost you to other organisations who can help with the difficult days.
  • Continue to access your portal – you will also still have access to your Seetec portal, including the job hub.

Whatever the situation, don’t struggle alone. Remember to let us know – that’s exactly why we’re here.

*The In-work support team is available Mon – Thu: 8:30am – 7:30pm, Fri: 8:30am – 4:30pm, and Saturday mornings 9:00am – 11:00am.
