From Caring for a Loved One to Rebuilding Her Future
For many years, Irena dedicated herself to caring for a loved one, providing end-of-life support that was both physically and emotionally demanding. While this experience reflected her deep compassion and commitment to others, it also left her feeling exhausted and unsure of what her next steps might look like.
When the time came to focus on rebuilding her own future, Irena knew she still wanted to work in care. It was where her passion lay. However, she was also looking for something that would give her a renewed sense of independence and control over her life.
Irena joined the Seetec Restart Scheme at a pivotal moment, where she was supported to explore her options and rebuild her confidence. Through working closely with the team, she began to recognise the value of her existing skills and experience, and started to consider a new direction.
With encouragement and guidance, Irena made the decision to become self-employed as a micro-provider. It was a big step, but one that aligned with her desire to offer a more personal and consistent level of care. The process of setting up her own business came with challenges, particularly navigating the practical and professional requirements, but with the right support in place, she was able to turn her idea into a reality.
Support from Seetec: Building Confidence and a Business
Ian, the Specialist Self-Employment Advisor, played a key role in supporting the setup of her business, helping her understand what was needed and assisting her in securing funding for essential resources. Nick, Irena’s Employment Advisor, worked closely with Irena to rebuild her confidence, encouraging her to believe in her abilities and take that important step into self-employment.
Alongside this, Amy, her Employability Trainer, provided vital emotional support. After years of caring for a loved one, Irena had been left feeling depleted, but with Amy’s help, she was able to rebuild her wellbeing and regain her sense of strength and direction.
A New Chapter: Confidence, Independence and Purpose
Now, Irena is thriving in her role. She describes being self-employed as life-changing, giving her the freedom to manage her own schedule and create a better balance in her life. Each day brings variety, and she has built strong, meaningful relationships with her clients.
The most rewarding part for Irena is knowing she is making a genuine difference. Her own experiences have shaped the way she delivers care, allowing her to connect with clients and their families with a deep level of empathy and understanding.
While she recognises that self-employment comes with responsibility and requires discipline, Irena is proud of the journey she has taken. What once felt like an uncertain future has become a fulfilling and sustainable career.
Reflecting on her experience, Irena credits the Restart Scheme with giving her both the practical tools and emotional support she needed to succeed. She felt seen as an individual throughout her journey, and having that support network made all the difference.
Today, Irena is not only running her own care business but has also rediscovered her confidence, independence and sense of purpose. As she puts it, this journey hasn’t just given her a career — it has given her back her spark.
