One Workshop, Big Change: Emma’s Success Story

After nearly two decades working as a teacher, Emma knew it was time for a change.

She still wanted a role that felt meaningful, but with more flexibility and variety to suit her lifestyle.

Like many people thinking about a career change, she wasn’t sure where to
start.

Then one day, while scrolling through Facebook, Emma spotted something that caught her eye: a National Careers Service workshop focused on applying for jobs in the Civil Service and local councils.

“I’d seen Civil Service jobs before, but the application process seemed so complicated,” Emma shared. “I honestly didn’t know where to begin.”

In December, she decided to give the workshop a try. It was led by National Careers Service adviser Becky, and over the course of three hours, Emma got a clear, step-by-step guide on how to apply for Civil Service roles.

She learned how to tailor her application answers, prepare for video interviews using the STAR method, and even
where to find and practise situational judgement tests.

Emma attended a National Careers Service workshop in December and began her journey to a new career.

Becky also walked the group through how to search for local opportunities online, and during the session, she shared a live example of a role in the South West that was closing the very next day.

Feeling newly confident and inspired, Emma decided to go for it.

Thanks to everything she’d learned in the workshop, Emma successfully passed each stage of the application process, including the test and interview, and was placed on the reserve list.

Just a few months later, she was offered the exact kind of role she’d been hoping for: a flexible, three-day-a-week, term-time position.

“The workshop gave me the confidence and tools I needed,” Emma said. “Becky showed us how to use the STAR method, and I practised my answers in advance. When it came to the real interview, the questions matched perfectly with the scenarios I’d prepared.”

Today, Emma loves her new job. It fits around her family life, offers room to grow, and has had a positive impact on her wellbeing.

“I’m so glad I applied, even with such a tight deadline. It’s given me more time with my children, room for career development, and a fresh sense of balance.”

Now working in a role where she helps others with their own career journeys, Emma is passionate about supporting young people, school leavers, and adults to access the same kind of guidance that helped her.

“I’d never tried applying for this kind of role before because I didn’t know how. That one workshop made all the difference; it’s the reason I got the job.”
