Re-entering the workforce after a two-year break
After a two-year break to raise her children, Emily, a skilled saddler from North Wiltshire, faced the challenge of re-entering the workforce.
Unsure of where to begin, she turned to the National Careers Service after being referred by Building Bridges Wiltshire.
A career built on passion
Emily’s passion for saddlery—crafting bridles, saddles, and other leather goods for horses—has always been at the heart of her career.
She trained as a saddler in 2003 and is part of a niche but thriving industry, with around 300 registered saddlers in the UK.
“Julie was incredibly helpful—always available when I needed guidance. She was thorough and approachable, which made a huge difference in my journey.

Finding the right fit
With the assistance of the National Careers Service and her industry connections, Emily successfully secured a part-time role at E. J. Wicks, a well-known saddlery shop in Lambourn.
Her new role is a perfect fit for her lifestyle.
Working 24 hours a week, she spends two days on-site and completes the rest from home.
The job’s flexibility, coupled with an employer who understands the demands of parenting, has made the transition back to work much smoother.
A story to inspire others
Emily’s journey is a powerful reminder that with the right support, no career break is too long, and no challenge is too great.
By seeking guidance, she reclaimed her confidence, reignited her passion, and proved that new beginnings are always possible.
