Tony – a story of determination and support
A story of determination and support
In July 2024, Tony self-referred to Work and Health Programme Pioneer after hearing about Seetec through his support team at Lancelot Support.
Eager to join, he brought with him a varied work history in hospitality and garage work, though his dream had always been to serve in the army.
Living with ADHD, Tony struggles with information retention and learns best through visual and repetitive methods.
His journey has been shaped by years in the care system, which continued into adulthood with residential support.
Moving frequently made it difficult for him to settle, trust others, and process the trauma he had experienced, including the devastating loss of his brother in a house fire.
Throughout his life, Tony often found himself in toxic social circles that led to poor decisions and trouble.
These experiences left him worried about how his past choices might impact his ability to find employment.
Tony’s journey into work
Determined to move forward, Tony was referred to Seetec, where he was assigned an employment coach, Genevieve. Together, they immediately got to work.
He received a new CV, secured the proper identification to work in the UK, and was enrolled in an SIA (Security Industry Authority) training course—though this presented challenges.
Due to his difficulties with information retention, Tony initially struggled to pass the first aid course. However, Seetec and his support team refused to give up. In a remarkable show of commitment, Tony’s support workers even completed the training themselves to better assist him.
Working for City Security has made my life very good.
Tony
With the unwavering support of City Security, particularly Jamie and Danny, who made critical adjustments, Tony pushed through, taking the test three times before finally passing, with Lancelot arranging for a tutor to assist on his third attempt.
Following his success, Tony began working with City Security as a steward.
He has since covered local matches for Torquay United and has secured a regular shift at Plymouth Argyle.
His role has also allowed him to work at major events, including the Plymouth vs. Liverpool match in February and a Kaiser Chiefs concert, an incredible experience for him as these are his heroes!
The future is bright
Tony’s future is looking bright. He is eager to work as many hours as possible, not just for financial independence but also to build new friendships.
He has even started his own bowling team to meet new people.
Tony recently moved into his own rented flat, where he continues to receive 24-hour support. In his spare time, he volunteers at The Mare and Foal Sanctuary, assisting in their busy warehouse.
Thanks to the encouragement of Kerri and Jess from the Sanctuary, he has found his place within the team and feels truly valued.

Tony’s journey is unique. He could have easily been overlooked, as his benefit situation and support needs meant that he was under no obligation to work.
Yet, his determination and drive, combined with the care and guidance of Lancelot Support, Seetec, Mare and Foal, and City Security, have set him on the path to his long-term goals.
His next step is securing licensed work as a security officer, and Lancelot has even purchased a car for him to learn to drive. With lessons funded through his earnings, Tony is preparing to book his driving test.
I thought I would never get this far because of my past, hanging around with bad people. Now I’m focusing on my life, my future.
Tony
His ultimate dream is to own his own home, and given his resilience, there’s every reason to believe he will make it happen.
