From Homelessness to Work: Thomas’s Story

After spending six months homeless and living in a tent, Thomas reached a point where he knew something had to change. Determined to turn things around, he was referred to the Restart Scheme by Plymouth Old Tree Court Jobcentre Plus — a step that would mark the beginning of a new chapter.

From day one, Thomas made the most of the support available to him. He regularly attended workshops, took part in one-to-one coaching sessions, and showed up to local job fairs ready to give things a go. It wasn’t always easy, but over time, those small, consistent steps started to build momentum.

With tailored support around him, Thomas began to rebuild his confidence and focus on his next steps. His CV improved, his interview skills developed, and he started to feel more positive about what might be possible.

“It’s given me back my purpose and confidence. For the first time in a long while, I feel like I’m moving forward.

Training for a New Career

A real turning point came when he was offered the chance to complete a Traffic Management course through the Restart Scheme. For Thomas, this wasn’t just another course — it was an opportunity to gain practical skills and a recognised qualification in an industry he could see a future in. Just as importantly, it gave him the confidence to believe he could do it.

After completing the training, things moved quickly. In February 2026, Thomas secured a role in Traffic Management.

He now works on-site managing traffic at an entrance, retrieving equipment, and supporting the day-to-day running of operations. The job comes with its challenges — including long hours and tough weather conditions — but Thomas takes real pride in what he does. After everything he’s been through, being back in work and earning again means a lot.

Giving Back to the Community

Thomas’s journey hasn’t just been about finding a job. Alongside his role, he also volunteers at Saint Peter’s and the Apostles’ Church, where he supports others who are facing difficult circumstances. Having experienced hardship himself, he’s able to offer understanding, encouragement, and reassurance to those who need it most.

Looking back, Thomas’s journey shows just how far someone can come with the right support and determination. From homelessness to stable employment, he has rebuilt not only his situation, but his confidence and sense of purpose too.

His story is a powerful reminder that, with the right opportunities and support in place, people can move forward — even from the most challenging starting points.
