“Diamonds Form Under Pressure” – Claire’s Journey Towards Self-Employment

Former firefighter, photographer and model Claire Allen has lived a life shaped by both high-pressure environments and deeply personal challenges. Today, she is using those experiences to build a new future through creativity, self-employment and a determination to help others.

One quote that has stayed with her throughout her journey is: “Diamonds form under pressure.” For Claire, it represents not only survival, but growth and transformation.

Living with PTSD After Domestic Abuse

Claire became a victim of domestic violence at the age of 19. The lasting impact of that experience means she continues to live with symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

“PTSD can creep up on me,” Claire explains. “I have become so mindful of the way my mind is working to keep me safe, but it doesn’t prevent the body’s stress response to everyday life, which can leave me feeling shell shocked, stressed and panicky.”

Even years later, trauma responses can surface unexpectedly, including during positive moments.

“Ironically, the trauma response often comes when I am feeling happy and hopeful, because that was how I was feeling when the violence started all those years ago.”

Despite these challenges, Claire has worked hard to understand her triggers, build resilience and take positive steps forward.

Finding Direction Through the Restart Scheme

Claire was referred to the Restart Scheme through Devizes Jobcentre at a time when she was ready to rebuild her confidence and explore a new direction for her future.

Through the programme, Claire worked closely with Ian, a self-employment specialist, who supported her in turning her creativity and passions into realistic business opportunities.

With personalised guidance, Claire was able to explore how her skills in photography, art and content creation could become the foundation for self-employment.

The support gave Claire structure, encouragement and belief in her ability to move forward after a difficult chapter in her life.

Turning Creativity Into Opportunity

For Claire, creativity has become more than a coping tool—it is now part of her future career ambitions.

“Painting has lifted me out of the mind and given me solace,” she says. “I am looking forward to seeing what unfolds. I am determined to build a legacy from all that I have been through, learnt and the gifts I am developing.”

Alongside painting, photography remains a major passion. Claire shares her work through her YouTube channel, Claire’s Love of Photography, where she inspires others to discover creativity and confidence through photography.

With support from the Restart Scheme, Claire is now exploring how these passions can grow into sustainable self-employment opportunities.

Building Confidence and Independence

The tailored support Claire received helped her regain confidence in her own abilities and recognise the value of her experiences, talents and determination.

By focusing on self-employment, Claire has been able to take practical steps towards greater independence while creating a future built around her strengths.

Her journey shows that with the right support, encouragement and belief, it is possible to move forward and create new opportunities.

Looking Ahead

Today, Claire continues to focus on her wellbeing, creativity and growing her self-employment ambitions. She hopes to use everything she has learned to inspire and support others facing challenges of their own.

From pressure, Claire is building something powerful—a future on her own terms.
