Navigating a new job market with career support from the National Careers Service

After a career marked by dedication to helping others, Karl from Plymouth found himself navigating unfamiliar territory: job searching in a modern, digital job market.

Thanks to the ongoing career support from the National Careers Service – and in particular, his trusted careers adviser Maggie – Karl’s story is one of resilience, reinvention, and the power of adapting through change.

A rich and varied background

Karl’s professional path has been anything but linear, with rich experience across housing support, fire safety, and tenancy management.

He spent many years helping people find stability – whether by managing housing for those experiencing homelessness or supporting communities as they re-emerged, post-Covid.

When his most recent contract as a Tenancy Sustainment Officer came to an end, Karl knew exactly where to turn: to Maggie once again. Maggie had supported him years earlier during another key transition in his career.

Back then, Karl had spent around 10 years doing agency work in housing support.

The short-term nature of these roles meant he rarely needed a CV.

When one job was coming to an end, he would simply inform the agency, and they would quickly arrange another placement.

Facing new challenges with dyslexia

Later, Karl worked for five years as a fire safety technician and found himself needing guidance – particularly in updating his CV, something he’d never had to worry about during his agency years.

The shift to a more digital job market, with online applications, LinkedIn profiles, and email-based communication, presented another new challenge.

On top of that, Karl lives with dyslexia and finds tasks like CV writing and emailing more difficult to manage.

Tailored support from the National Careers Service

Maggie immediately recognised both the barriers he faced and the strengths he brought to the table.

With a calm, approachable style that made it easy for Karl to ask questions, she created a clear action plan: first to update his CV, then to craft tailored cover letters, and finally to build an online presence and apply through platforms like Indeed.

Her support didn’t stop at paperwork—she helped Karl find structure and gave him the tools to stay productive and motivated during his job search.

Building confidence and momentum

“I think the structure really helped – it kept me productive every day,” Karl shared.

“Maggie’s easy approach, where we talked things through, gave me the confidence to ask questions. Things have changed out there, and it’s ever-evolving, but she makes it manageable.”

A new role with broader impact

Karl has now stepped into an exciting new role as a Business Development Officer, overseeing two business parks and supporting 59 local businesses.

This position draws on his extensive background in housing, business support, and community engagement, while introducing a new focus: helping connect local people with employment opportunities.

His work involves aligning business needs with local talent, supporting training initiatives, and contributing to the growth of small and emerging businesses across the area.

Coming full circle

It’s a full-circle moment in his career – moving from directly supporting residents to empowering the businesses that serve them.

Karl’s journey is a powerful reminder that careers rarely follow a straight path, and that with the right support, it’s possible to adapt to change and rediscover purpose.

Through two major career transitions, Maggie from the National Careers Service has been a steady source of guidance and encouragement.

Her practical advice and supportive approach have helped Karl navigate uncertainty with confidence and clarity, turning challenges into opportunities.
