After the death of her husband, Lisa – from Liverpool – found herself looking for a new route in life.

Before his passing, the pair had built up a catering business from scratch.

But due to the cost-of-living crisis – and now managing on her own – Lisa had to make the heart-breaking decision to close it down.

“It was traumatising,” Lisa tells us.

“It was really sad, but I knew he wouldn’t have wanted me to pay the rising costs, which did make the decision a little easier.”

After losing her business and her husband – and knowing she wanted a different direction – Lisa contacted the National Careers Service for support.

Fresh start

Lisa decided it was time for a change from catering; “I wanted to go into phlebotomy, and now I’m doing an occupational course in college,” Lisa says.

Knowing the importance of gained experience, Lisa asked her adviser to help create a CV and cover letter so she could apply for a volunteering position alongside her college course.

“My adviser got back to me within 45 minutes with improvements to both my CV and cover letter.

“It was really fast, which was amazing and meant I could get applying straight away,” she tells us.

Refreshing

Lisa shared her feelings about how her life has changed; “I’m loving this fresh start with college and volunteering. It’s completely different than what I have been doing the last 20 years.

“It’s been really refreshing.”

Lisa adds that she’s already recommending National Careers Service to other people; “I’ve told some older ladies I know about the free support on offer.

“I told them how amazing you guys were and how my adviser made everything very simple.”

Lisa is now looking to her future; “I’m so excited for what it holds.”
