“I can finally buy a handbag – and I earned it thanks to the
Bournemouth Restart Scheme.” Becky
A Tough Start, But Not a Closed Door
For 39-year-old Becky from Bournemouth, getting her first paid job wasn’t just about earning money.

It was about proving that with the right support, determination can overcome any barrier.
Diagnosed with a neurological condition called motor apraxia at a young age, Becky faced challenges most people take for granted.
Her condition affected her coordination, balance, and development—making things like walking, learning, and socialising more difficult.
Added to this, Becky also has dyscalculia, a learning difficulty that made working in her dream job in retail seem out of reach.
But Becky didn’t let any of this stop her. She had a clear goal: to find a job and gain independence.
Finding Confidence at CRUMBS
For five years, Becky volunteered with The CRUMBS Project, a local charity helping disadvantaged people develop life and hospitality skills.
Through CRUMBS, Becky built her confidence, improved her cooking, and began to imagine a different future.
“I loved my time at CRUMBS, but I knew I wanted more. I was ready for work,” Becky said.
Grateful for their support, Becky sought for the next step towards employment.

Enter Seetec and the Restart Scheme
When Becky spoke with her Jobcentre Plus work coach, they referred her to the Bournemouth Restart Scheme, delivered by Seetec.
Although she was nervous to leave her comfort zone, Becky embraced the opportunity.
That’s when she met Charyse, her Seetec employment adviser. Together, they created a step-by-step plan to help Becky overcome barriers and build skills to find a job.
To help with her social confidence, Charyse invited Becky to group activities like pumpkin carving and cooking sessions.
“I’d never carved a pumpkin before – I thoroughly enjoyed the session!” Becky shared with a smile.
The Job That Changed Everything
After getting to know Becky’s strengths, Charyse encouraged her to apply for a role at a brand new Co-op store at Bournemouth Hospital.
It was a big leap – but Becky took it.
Charyse helped Becky with her application, CV, and interview preparation using practical tools like the STAR technique.
On interview day, Charyse even met Becky at the venue to ease her nerves.
That support paid off – Becky got the job!
“I was delighted! The team at Seetec were so friendly and helpful. The Restart Scheme gave me the confidence to go for it,” Becky said.

Building a Brighter Future
Now thriving in her role as a customer service assistant, Becky is enjoying the independence and routine that work brings.
“Now I’ve got a paid job, I can go shopping to buy some new clothes!” she laughs. “I’m saving for a Gucci handbag and even planning a holiday.”
She’s not stopping here. With continued in-work support from Charyse, Becky is building skills, confidence, and a future she’s proud of.
Charyse beams: “Helping Becky reach her dream job in retail feels amazing. She deserves every success, and I’ll be right here to support her.”
